Adsorption and migration of carbon adatoms on zigzag carbon nanotubes
Using density-functional tight-binding and ab initio methods we study the adsorption and migration of carbon adatoms on surfaces of single-walled zigzag carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate that the adatoms form strong covalent bonds with the nanotubes and that the migration is strongly anisotropic. The adatom adsorption energy and migration barrier depend on the nanotube diameter and chirality. Th...
متن کاملElectrical switching in metallic carbon nanotubes.
We present first-principles calculations of quantum transport which show that the resistance of metallic carbon nanotubes can be changed dramatically with homogeneous transverse electric fields if the nanotubes have impurities or defects. The change of the resistance is predicted to range over more than 2 orders of magnitude with experimentally attainable electric fields. This novel property ha...

متن کاملLuttinger liquid behavior in metallic carbon nanotubes
Coulomb interaction effects have pronounced consequences in carbon nanotubes due to their 1D nature. In particular, correlations imply the breakdown of Fermi liquid theory and typically lead to Luttinger liquid behavior characterized by pronounced power-law suppression of the transport current and the density of states, and spin-charge separation. This paper provides a review of the current und...
متن کاملTransport suppression in polymer-doped zigzag carbon nanotubes
The conductance of zigzag carbon nanotubes in the presence of grafted polymers attached to their walls is investigated. A theoretical study of the dependence of the transport on the nature of the molecule and on the concentration of attached structures is presented. The attached structures are shown to lead to the formation of resonant states trapping the electronic carriers and suppressing the...
